Walsall Council case study
Executive Coaching

The following case study looks at some of the coaching Caret has done with Walsall MBC and how this impacted both the individual and his wider team.

The Issue

We began coaching a senior executive in Human Resources at Walsall MBC. At the time of starting to work, his job was a frustrating experience for him. Using psychometrics and an eighteen month coaching programme we established the reasons for his frustration. He is a strategic and innovative thinker with a very good understanding of the significant impact HR can have on organisations. His manager was an operational, detail conscious person who did not recognise or enable the wider contribution he could make. Identifying the problem was helpful but, of course, this does not resolve the issue.

Caret’s Solution

We were asked to support a 360 review process and observed him in his team meetings and one to ones and monitored his flexible approach to his own staff. We worked with him to raise his performance management, but he had many good practices in place already. As the 360 process developed, it was clear that he had underutilised capabilities, so we began to explore how HR should act in a broader way to shape the people agenda in Walsall.

The Results and Impacts

He has brought his team together and ensured that all managers provide a high calibre service. They were recently named as the most improved service in the Council. The experience with this client reinforces the view that coaching is not normally remedial working to turn someone hopeless into someone of passable ability. It was a pleasure to work with such a highly capable and knowledgeable person to raise his impact in the organisation and improve job satisfaction!
